Fall is in the air, it's time to "leaf" some things behind, and refresh. I know, it's corny, but I thought it was worth a chuckle. but really, fall is a good time to reboot, reenergize, and refresh those ideas, goals or projects you want to do before the end of the year.

My focus is on fitness and self-care. Actually my focus has been on fitness all year, but I feel like I need to recommit to my goals and modify where needed. Come with me on this journey. Check out my article in The Crazy Wisdom Journal - Fall Into Fitness - Seven Fun Ways to Ease into Fitness.

Words of Wisdom – 5 Ways to Celebrate National Ice Cream Month

What’s the scoop? July is celebrated as National Ice Cream Month. Your words of wisdom for today are – It’s okay to eat your desert first. Call it backwards day if you want but treat yourself to an ice cream dessert and have it before your meal. It’s National Ice Cream Month (almost).

Do you remember that old chant, “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream? It doesn’t take that much encouragement for me to become excited about ice cream. If fact, just flash a  picture of mint chocolate on a sugar cone, and I’m salivating like Pavlov’s dog. Enough about me, here are 5 Ways to celebrate National Ice Cream Month.

1.      Host an ice cream social and game night – set up an outdoor game day or inside game night, you choose. Serve up a scoop of ice cream and a scoop of fun.

2.      Create an ice cream stand – it’s the season for lemonade stands, how about setting up an ice cream stand?

3.      Try a new flavor ice cream – is there a favorite flavor ice cream that is your go to signature type? After you indulge in your favorite treat, mix it up next time and try something different.

4.      Treat a friend to an ice cream cone or sundae – ice cream and fun, how can you top that…? Perhaps include a drizzle of chocolate syrup and sprinkles.

5.      Make a special dessert using ice cream – milkshakes, Sundaes, and ice cream a ’la mode, are a few ice cream dessert options to tease your palate.

What would you add to the list of ways to celebrate National Ice Cream Month? Do you have words of wisdom related to ice cream month?

Words of Wisdom – National Cartoonist Day

Archie, Betty & Veronica, and Jughead, were some of the characters in my favorite Archie comic book series as a child. As an adult my love for comics remained but shifted to comic strips. Grabbing a copy of the Sunday newspaper from the store once home I’d find a comfy spot and search out the comic section.

Do you have a favorite comic strip or cartoon that you’ve enjoyed? May 5th is celebrated as National Cartoonist Day and was established in 1990. Celebrate by watching a cartoon, reading a comic strip, and giving a shout out to your favorite cartoonist.

There is something relaxing about reading and tuning out everything around you, temporarily. Here are some of my favorite comic strips (not a complete list):

For Better or For Worse

Beetle Bailey

The Family Circus

The Lockhorns

Hi and Lois

Marmaduke

Kudos to those creative cartoonists who bring joy to many through your work.

List some of your favorite comic strips.

Words of Wisdom – The Donkey in the Well

“It's not what happens to you that determines how far you will go in life; it is how you handle what happens to you.”

—Zig Ziglar

Below is a story I’ve seen around the internet many times, may it serve as an inspiration to you.

The Donkey in the Well

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out a way to get him out. Finally, he decided it was probably impossible and the animal was old, and the well was dry anyway, so it just wasn't worth it to try and retrieve the donkey. So, the farmer asked his neighbors to come over and help him cover up the well. They all grabbed shovels and began to shovel dirt into the well.

At first, when the donkey realized what was happening he cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down and let out some happy brays. A few shovel loads later, the farmer looked down the well to see what was happening and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was shaking it off and taking a step up. (Shifting)

As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he continued to shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, to everyone's amazement, the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!

Moral: Life is going to shovel dirt on you. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Every adversity can be turned into a stepping stone. The way to get out of the deepest well is by never giving up but by shaking yourself off and taking a step up.

What happens to you isn't nearly as important as how you react to it.

Words of Wisdom - Reading Inspires

National Book Lover's Day was celebrated on August 9th. No  need to fret, you can celebrate reading and the love of books at any time.

I am excited to share with you a book I won from author and fellow blogger Sherry Ellis. I received a review copy of the book before it hits the shelves. The title of Sherry’s middle grade book is Bubba and Squirt’s Mayan Adventure.

Bubba and Squirt’s Mayan Adventure is an educational Latin-American historical fiction story that teaches young middle grade readers about Mayan Indian culture while adding elements of mystery and magic. It includes recipes and a Spanish work glossary. For crafts, fun activities, and a teacher guide, visit  www.bubbaandsquirt.com.

Bubba and Squirt are relatable characters who draw you right into their story. Share the joy of reading with a middle grade reader that you know.

Reading is inspiring.
