Fun Friday – How do you follow your passion?

This post is a repeat from last year, but includes added information.

What is your passion and where does it take you? People around me know that I don’t leave home without a notebook and an ink pen. If you’re a passenger in my car, you may be asked to jot down a thought for me…can’t let those nuggets of inspiration disappear. Writing is my passion, it follows me.

Over a decade ago, I attended a birthday party for a friend’s aunt, at the aunt’s home. As my sons and I pulled into the circular drive, I thought wow, this is nice. As I stepped into the foyer and walked through to the living room, I was captivated. There was a large open living room, with a Florida room attached.

I looked up, and in the corner of the room was a narrow winding staircase that led to a small loft area. Like a kid in a candy store, I said, “Oooh, can I go up there?” Once I was at the top of the staircase, I was drawn to a corner of the room that held a four-shelf bookcase and a desk with a tall floor lamp beside it.

I yelled down to the party host, “You don’t have to entertain me, I’ll stay up here and write.”

Afraid that I wouldn’t be invited back, I rejoined the celebration instead of giving in to the urge to be anti-social by spending time with my muse.

As we got in our car to leave, my son whispered to me, “Ma, are they rich?”

“I don’t know, but I really liked their library area.”

My passion for writing and writing spaces, seems to follow me wherever I go. A few years ago, when I first visited the college campus that my son attends, I walked around in awe. One particular building caught my attention. It was a huge, historic brick building, surrounded by willow trees, and a couple of park benches along the walkway.

Walking with my son, I said, “ooooh…”

Before I could complete my sentence he said, “Don’t tell me…this would make a good writing spot.”

“Yes.”

“Ma, please don’t randomly show up on campus. This is why I wanted to go to school out of state.”

I did not randomly show up at my son school, but I do follow my passion by taking advantage of stolen moments to spend time writing.

I encourage you too, to take advantage of stolen moments to pursue your passion. Your passion may include exploring areas that spark your interest. The timing doesn’t have to be perfect, you don’t have to make huge sacrifices, but do something for you.

Motivational Monday – Embrace each chapter of your life

Embrace aging

I can name 56 flaws as I embrace Chapter 56 of my life. Instead, I choose to focus on chapter 56 with faith, fun, and feeling fabulous. What chapter are you on in your book of life?

When your birthday rolls around do you run and bury your head in the sand or hide  underneath your bed covers and refuse to surface? Don’t do it.

The countdown has begun for my 56th birthday. Yes, I know the saying, a woman isn’t supposed to tell her age. Well, I just did, and I wasn’t struck down. Embrace your age.

As I encourage myself, I encourage you to embrace who you are, where you are. Our word this week is embrace. Here is a reminder of the definition of embrace:

“The act of accepting something willingly or enthusiastically.”

Now for your challenge…

Take your age or half your age and create a list of positive words or phrases about yourself. Make up words if you want, as long as you have fun in the process. Don’t think too hard about it, set a timer, and go. You don’t have to show your list to anyone, so brag on yourself. Here is a list to jump-start your thinking:

Start with and I AM statement.

I AM…

Beautiful     Caring     Fun     Good Friend     Prospering

Fantabulous     Intelligent     Giving     Dependable     Kind

Honest     Smart     Unique

Consider this exercise as part of your path on the road to wellness and increased self-care. What route will you take? This week I’m taking Route 56. The road will be paved with 56 kind words, quotes, phrases or whatever I come up with.

Every day for the next week, remember our key word, embrace. If challenges come your way, embrace them too. Stop and ask yourself, what can I learn from this situation?

One way I embrace my uniqueness is to take my flaws and turn them into funnies (funny stories). For instance, there was a time I was starting a new nutrition program (for the millionth time). The plan included a day of cleansing.

Just to be clear, the reference wasn’t to cleanse as in washing your body with soap and water. It meant not eating. I was discussing the program with my son, I told him, “I can’t wait to go to bed, and wake up tomorrow to NOT eat all day.”

There you have it. I embraced my weight challenges and efforts with humor (sprinkled with sarcasm).

If you’re celebrating a birthday this week, this month, or in a coming month…Happy Birthday.

Keep pushing forward.

Have fun.

Embrace you!

Feel Good Friday – Random Act of Kindness Day

How does it feel when someone shares a kind word with you or performs a kind gesture? Do you experience a warm fuzzy feeling? You can extend that same feeling to someone by performing a random act of kindness. This national holiday is celebrated on February 17th each year.

Random Act of Kindness day was started in 1995 by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation. Their goal was to “make kindness the norm.” Kindness is one way to show others that you care about them. When you extend kindness to someone you still get that warm fuzzy feeling, the same as if you were the receiver.

As it happens when I read, I came across interesting ideas…ways to engage in acts of kindness. Below are 7 ways to display kindness.

1.      Hold the door open for someone.

2.      Donate your coins for a good cause.

3.      Leave a kind note in a library book.

4.      Put encouraging sticky notes around town.

5.      Put stray grocery carts away at the store.

6.      Hide dollars with notes around a dollar store.

7.      Give someone a compliment.

Kindness is not reserved for one day a year. Random Act of Kindness Day is just the beginning of creating a habit of spreading kindness. What would you add to the list of ways to express kindness?

Wacky Wednesday – Chocolate Mint Day – 5 Fun Facts

Chocolate and mint…smooth, silky, delightful to the palate. Did you know that Chocolate Mint day is coming up? It is a national holiday that is recognized on February 19, and a great day to indulge in your favorite treat or try something different.

Check out some fun facts about chocolate mint below.

·         When drinking chocolate as a hot beverage, many early lovers of the drink added mint, cinnamon, and other spices to it for flavor.

·         As soon as sugar was added to dark chocolate, the combination of chocolate and mint became a trend.

·         By mid-1800’s when mass production of chocolate was common, candy stores started advertising mint chocolates to the public.

·         In the 1900’s dark chocolate was served with mint swigs in tea houses and dining rooms to encourage good breath and aid digestion.

·         In 1973, a culinary student Marilyn Rickets, invented mint chocolate chip ice cream at South Devon College in the UK.

Now the fun part…here are 3 ways to celebrate Chocolate Mint Day

1.      Start your day with chocolate mint coffee.

2.      Make a batch of cookies using mint chocolate chips instead of the regular chips.

3.      Treat your friends or coworkers to York Peppermint Patties.

All ideas above were taken from Always The Holidays, check out their site for a full list of chocolate mint ideas and recipes.

Hope your day is sweet!

Motivational Monday – Valentine’s Day Self-love – 4 Ideas for Celebrating You

The Hallmark Channel is showing RomCom's all day. Is it okay to call work and say you need the day off? Asking for a friend.

February is Loveuary…according to the Hallmark Channel. Their tag line is “love happens all month long.” Let’s take that tag line a step further and include self-love all month long. Make this an opportunity to bask in all things relaxing. Start with Valentine’s Day which is also a day for love.

Just in case you’re looking for non-traditional things to do for Valentine’s Day here’s a list of 4 ideas.

1.      Watch Rom Com’s (Romantic Comedies) – the Hallmark Channel plans to show romantic movies all day for Valentine’s Day. I don’t receive any compensation for mentioning this, I’m simply a fan of mushy movies, and mysteries.

2.      Watch a comedy show that has Valentine’s Day as the theme or has Valentine’s Day in their jokes. I came across a collection of Dry Bar Comedy clips where the comedians referred to Valentine’s Day.

3.       Try a new recipe – Valentine related.

4.      Listen to soothing music  - it can be music with the word valentine in it, or love. It doesn’t matter the style or genre of music as long as it’s soothing to you. Check out Charlie Wilson's Forever Valentine.

Remember…February is Loveuary. Give yourself permission to love on yourself a little more.

Fun Friday – A Bundle of Joy – Tales of a College Graduate

My bundle of joy arrived January 29th at 9pm. The darling weighed over 10 pounds and left me exhausted. That was the night my college graduate dropped off a huge bag of laundry for me wash.

I don’t think my son realizes that at my age, 9pm is the middle of the night. Nor does he realize that his actions are a display of entitlement. What I think he believes is that he’s putting his Business Management skills to work.

When my son stopped by for a weekend visit he entered the house with a mesh laundry bag over his shoulder. It hung from his back like Santa with a sack of toys. I heard him before I saw him as he shouted, “Ma, I’m home and I’m bearing gifts.”

As I entered the room my son said, “You might want to start washing tonight, I have a lot of clothes.”

I looked at him like a deer in headlights then said, “I’ll pencil you in for tomorrow and leave an invoice.”

I agreed to wash the bundle…the next day. As I began to sort the clothes I discovered socks balled up, pants with one leg inside-out, and towels that were softer than mine. I might keep the towels.

After the laundry episode I added a new word to my son’s vocabulary – empowerment. I looked up the definition for him in my Webster’s Dictionary – yes I still have a print edition of that. Here’s the definition – “The granting of power, right or authority to perform various acts or duties.”

I grabbed an empty paper towel role and pretended we were in ancient times when kings/people were knighted. I had my son face me and lean forward, tapped him on each shoulder with the paper towel role. I said, “I now deem you empowered to do your own laundry.”

“Is all this necessary?”

“I’m quite sure it is. I want you to know without a doubt, that I have every confidence that you are capable of washing your own clothes.”

At this point, I felt the eye-roll coming before I saw it. This only fueled my actions of exaggeration and sarcasm. “Come with me.”

My son followed me to our laundry area where I pointed out, “This is the Tide Laundry Detergent. Here are the Gain dryer sheets. You have all the necessary tools to get the job done.”

After a few more rolls of the eyes my son said, “Okay, I get it. Empowerment. I need to do my own laundry.”

This fun exercise in empowerment is an example that worked well for my son. He appreciated the humor tailored just for him. My son knows that I don’t mind occasionally washing his clothes, but there are ground rules and expectations. If I’m washing his clothes, it’s to free him up to do something important working on his car, repairing something for me, etc.

And the moral of this story, if there is one…it’s okay to support your kids and have a little fun in the process.

Think of a fun situation that has brought you joy recently…may it spread sunshine throughout your day.
