Monday Musings – What I have in common with Janet Jackson

It’s true, Janet Jackson and I have something in common – we’re both women, she’s a singer, I am too (not as well, actually I sound better when music drowns me out). Our closet connection is that we’ve both experienced a wardrobe malfunction…in public.

If you have ever had an embarrassing moment, you will be able to relate to my story. It happened early on a Sunday morning. I was on the devotion team at church, which meant I stood at the front of the church with a few other people at the beginning of service.

During devotion someone reads a scripture, another prays, and all of us lead the parishioners in a song. Singing. This was my opportunity to sing loudly, off key, and hope no one noticed. I sang my heart out. In my mind I had the moves of Janet Jackson, the soulful sound of Aretha Franklin, and the beard of Barry White.

As I was singing, the neckline of my dress felt like it was choking me. I tugged at the fabric, but the discomfort was still there. Once we finished singing, I returned to the pew and pulled at my neckline again. I looked at the inside of the dress and saw writing, it was the tag. My dress was on backwards!

You may be asking, how did she manage to wear her dress backwards? Well, my dress has the same pattern on the front and back. The tag that identifies the size was not an actual label; there was only writing. So, I wore my dress proudly, backwards for the next two hours, until I could get home and pull it off.

Once I got home, I pulled on a pair of yoga pants and an oversized t-shirt. These were the clothes of comfort that I knew would not betray. Just for fun I grabbed my karaoke microphone and began singing one of Janet Jackson’s songs - Funny How time Flies When You’re Having Fun. Did you just start singing that tune in your head?

The only thing I really have in common with Janet Jackson is that we’re that same age, and that little malfunction with our clothing.

What is something weird, funny or crazy that has happened to you lately?

Fun Friday – 5 things to say if you’re caught sleeping at your desk

Have you ever had a day where you felt really tired at work? I haven’t fallen asleep at my desk at work, but I have done it at home. While sitting at my laptop working on a project, my eyelids became heavy.

I thought I could slip in a 15-minute power nap. Part way through my nap, I heard a clicking sound. I later discovered it was my son, and he had taken a photo of me with MY phone.

Well, if you happen to fall asleep at your desk, here are some things to say if you’re caught sleeping at your desk.

1.      “Did you ever notice sound coming out of these keyboards when you put your ear down real close?”

2.      “This is one of the seven habits of highly effective people.”

3.      “This is in exchange for the six hours I spent last night dreaming about work.”

4.      “Boy, that cold medicine I took last night just won’t wear off.”

5.      “… and I especially thank you for my excellent boss, Amen.”
What would you add to the list?

Fun Friday – How many things do you say to your child in one day?

On any given day it can seem like a parent gives her child a thousand directions of things that need to be done. Those things can be in the form of – get out of bed, make up your bed, do your homework, and the list goes on. One mom compiled all of the things she may say to her kids in a 24 hour period.
That mom, Anita Renfroe, put her ideas to music using the William Tell Overture’. The video below has been around for a while, but I thought it was worth sharing. Enjoy!

What things do you find yourself telling your kids over and over again?

Feel Good Friday - What makes you smile or laugh?

If you take a minute to think about the last time you smiled or laughed out loud, what was the cause of your joy? What kind of things put a smile on your face?
Below is a short list of things that brighten my face with a smile.

  1. Eating a grape Popsicle in the warm sunshine.
  2. My son trying to dance (off beat).
  3. My husband telling a corny joke, and laughing like its funny.
  4. Watching kids open gifts.
  5. Fitting into an outfit that I haven’t worn in a long time (because it was too tight).
  6. Reading a good book with a satisfying ending.
  7. When kids do something nice when its least expected.
  8. Spending time with friends.
  9. Making someone else smile.
  10. Knowing that God’s got my back. He can do anything, but fail. He can make a way out of no way. He is the Alpha and Omega. Wait, am I preaching? Oh well. It’s still good to have God’s divine intervention.
Find a reason to laugh out loud today and share the experience.

Mother’s Day – The gifts that mean the most

A special treat for mom.

As we approach Mother’s Day, I am reminded of times that my boys creatively gave gifts from their heart. When they were younger they made cards decorated with pasta and gave me hugs. Now as tweens/teens, their gifts have taken on a different look.
The kids know I love Sweedish Fish (candy), so this is a gift they can never go wrong in giving. In fact I have already received my bag for this year. I devoured them as soon as I took the photo of them for this posting.

Last year my Mother’s Day wish was for a spa day. I anticipated the warm towel from a facial, jets blaring from a foot bath, and muscle tensions easing in my neck. What I got was a home version of a spa day.

Joshua took out the foot bath and had me soak my feet. Before he trimmed my toenails, he left the room to look for safety goggles. He returned with swim goggles. My pedicure continued until every toe was massaged and trimmed.

A pedicure gone wild.

When my pedicure was done, there was water on my floor and a towel in a heap on top of a bottle of foot oil and toenail clippers.  But my feet felt good.

When I shoved my hand in front of Joshua, he huffed and he puffed like the big bad wolf. He understood that I wanted my hands massaged next. He pushed my cuticles back with his hands, then nearly sanded my skin off with the emery board. When he was done, he shoved his hand in front of me. He was waiting for a tip.

Next year I think I’ll ask for a card decorated with pasta.
One gift I really cherished was the coupon book that the kids created. The coupons included:

  • 30 minutes of quiet time.
  • Complete chores without complaining.
  • Keep bedroom clean for an entire week.
I tried to slip in a few coupons of my own, but the kids said substitutions/additions were not allowed. I was told double coupons were also out of the question.

What Mother’s Day gifts have been most memorable to you?
