Feel Good Friday – 5 Ways to Make Mother’s Day Magical

Mother’s Day this year will look different than year’s past, but it can still be magical. As we continue to practice social distancing and self-quarantining due to COVID-19, it may not be feasible to visit our moms, grandmothers, or other mother figures. What can you do to make their Mother’s Day magical?

Whether you are near your mom or a significant distance away, consider these 5 ways for sprinkling a little magic dust on her day.

1.      Dance Party – create a playlist of songs, put on your boogie shoes, and face time your mom or set up a Zoom call. If your mom lives nearby drive by her house and dance outside. Dance as though no one is watching, although they might be.

2.      Send Flowers – there’s something about flowers that brightens a room.

3.      Have dinner delivered – does mom have a favorite restaurant? There are delivery services such as Door Dash and Uber Eats that are just a call away.

4.      Watch a mother-themed movie – you may have to be creative with this one. If you are able to visit your mom this is easy. If you can’t visit, decide on a time that you will both watch the same movie at the same time. Here are a few favorites to start with:

5.      Buy a book – support your local independent bookstore, purchase a book, journal or special keepsake item. While you’re at it, grab a book for yourself. You deserve it too.

Are you a proud Mama? Although Mother’s Day is recognized as the second Sunday in May, this entire week will be dedicated to celebrating mom’s. Kudos to you for all that you do for your family.

If you had to name one thing that you are proud of at this moment, what would it be? My source of parenting joy place right now is my youngest son’s accomplishments. The fact that he has grown/matured during his senior year of high school.

I have learned to celebrate the small accomplishments along the way-Rookie of the Year in Rugby, honor roll, acceptance to college. As my son’s Senior year of high school comes to a close, end of the year activities are underway. Most recently was his prom.

Moms mean a lot to us. It may be a grandma, aunt, sister or other mother figure who plays a significant role in our lives. Whatever the case, we learn a lot from our mother figures. There may have even been a TV mom who taught a lesson or two.

Asa child it was fun to take a break from real life to tune in to see what moms on television and their families were up to. Can you identify the TV moms below and what show she played on?

How many did you get right? Did you have a favorite TV show mom? I didn’t have a favorite, but I can still sing all of the words to the Brady Bunch theme song. Although I’m not sure that I should be bragging about that.

Mother’s Day – The gifts that mean the most

A special treat for mom.

As we approach Mother’s Day, I am reminded of times that my boys creatively gave gifts from their heart. When they were younger they made cards decorated with pasta and gave me hugs. Now as tweens/teens, their gifts have taken on a different look.

The kids know I love Sweedish Fish (candy), so this is a gift they can never go wrong in giving. In fact I have already received my bag for this year. I devoured them as soon as I took the photo of them for this posting.

Last year my Mother’s Day wish was for a spa day. I anticipated the warm towel from a facial, jets blaring from a foot bath, and muscle tensions easing in my neck. What I got was a home version of a spa day.

Joshua took out the foot bath and had me soak my feet. Before he trimmed my toenails, he left the room to look for safety goggles. He returned with swim goggles. My pedicure continued until every toe was massaged and trimmed.

When my pedicure was done, there was water on my floor and a towel in a heap on top of a bottle of foot oil and toenail clippers.  But my feet felt good.

When I shoved my hand in front of Joshua, he huffed and he puffed like the big bad wolf. He understood that I wanted my hands massaged next. He pushed my cuticles back with his hands, then nearly sanded my skin off with the emery board. When he was done, he shoved his hand in front of me. He was waiting for a tip.

Next year I think I’ll ask for a card decorated with pasta.

One gift I really cherished was the coupon book that the kids created. The coupons included:

• 30 minutes of quiet time.
• Complete chores without complaining.
• Keep bedroom clean for an entire week.

I tried to slip in a few coupons of my own, but the kids said substitutions/additions were not allowed. I was told double coupons were also out of the question.
