Monday Musings – April is National Humor Month - What does a public restroom and disaster preparedness have in common?

If you have ever seen the inside of a woman’s large purse, you know it contains everything except the kitchen sink. That’s the way my grandmother would phrase it. Plainly stated, I could win that baby shower game where you have to find the items on the list, inside your purse.

An ink pen, a bobby pin, a band-aid, and business cards, all reside with other items in the deep dark jungle of my purse. I was glad I had those other items available on that fretful day I ventured into a grocery store restroom. There were no warning signs that told me to turn back, or ”pardon our dust.”

A scene from the fairytale, Goldilocks, and the Three Bears, flashed before me. There were three restroom stalls for me to choose from. I pushed open the first door and there was toilet paper strategically lined on top of the toilet seat. I contorted my face and moved on. Stall number two had long sections of toilet paper on the floor. I backed away.

Finally at stall three, afraid of what I might see, I pushed the door open with my foot. I slithered into the stall trying not to touch anything. When I attempted to slide the door lock, it wiggled and jiggled and barely closed. I looked up and was greeted by a large gap in the door frame. If anyone were to walk in, we would be locked in eye-to-eye combat.

That look when you're ready for battle

There was a battle going on between my conscious and subconscious. Do I hurry up and use the restroom and flee or take a chance on trying to make it home? That grocery store restroom was what I’d consider a disaster. The grocery store was only 10 minutes from my final destination, but I also wanted to stop to fill my gas tank.

I was prepared for my pseudo disaster. My purse had items I could use, and in my recent workout the instructor had us do squats and hold them. My decision was made. I hovered over the toilet, purse on my shoulder, and arms wrapped around my body, so I touched nothing.

I got out of that stall like the gingerbread man running from the fox. I looked to my right at the sink and said out loud. “nope not touching that either.” I used items from my purse to clean my hands – hand sanitizer, and hemorrhoid wipes (not mine, but that’s a story for a different day).

Disaster avoided.

What does a public restroom and disaster preparedness have in common? Be prepared for anything. Be anxious for nothing.

Fun Friday – National Humor Month -Read the Small Print

Where do you find humor? It’s not a mystery, extensive research is not needed, it’s often right in front of us. For me, it’s family…and other life situations.

Tupac Shakur was a popular rap artist in the 1990’s. One of my sons was born the same year that Tupac died, yet both of my sons talk about Tupac’s music as though they were around at the time of his fame. My older son surprised his brother by visiting him at college, with a birthday gift in hand. It was a small gesture, but one he knew his brother would appreciate. Maybe.

My older son entered his brothers’ apartment with a broad grin across his face and holding the gift behind his back. “I got you something.” He whipped out a rolled-up poster that had a quote along the side. “This is you Bro, read the quote.”

“…by the words of His mouth…okay, that’s nice.”

“It’s a Tupac poster.”

My younger son began unrolling the poster, “Um, I don’t think this is a Tupac poster.” Stars and constellations danced on the poster as my son read the entire  quote to his brother.

“By the word of the Lord the heavens were made and the stars, by the word of His mouth” – Psalm 33:6

As my son recanted this story to me over the phone I said, “Did you get Tupac confused with Jesus?”

I told my son about an old spiritual song parishioners used to sing at my grandfathers’ church. The lyrics were, take the Lord along with you everywhere you go; You’re gonna’ need Him, everywhere you go.

The poster error was one way of telling my sons they needed a little more Jesus and a little less Tupac. I still had one lingering question for my son, “How did you think you had a Tupac poster?”

The answer was simple, “I just grabbed the wrong one, the posters were all next to each other.”

Read the small print and know what you’re getting. It’s not always bad, just know what you’re getting.

Have you ever misread a label?

Fun Friday – National Humor Month

Ha-ha, he he, lol are a few ways to express laughter. Exercise your funny bone during National Humor Month. This national holiday is celebrated each year in April and is about encouraging humor in your life.

National Humor Month was created in 1976 by Larry Wilde to show that humor is a useful tool in uplifting one’s spirits. Statistics show that laughter brings happiness and joy in our lives. Did you know that the average adult laughs 17 times a day?

Now that all the facts are out of the way, how will you celebrate National Humor Month? Here are 3 ideas to kick off your celebration:

1.      Make an “already done” list and celebrate your accomplishments.

2.      Take breaks during your day to do something fun – think back to your childhood days, what games did you like? Try a weighted hula hoop, play jacks, or create a hopscotch on a sidewalk.

3.      Organize a hum-along at work – Dedicate Fridays as Fun Friday. Begin each Friday with a hum-along. Hum songs and have coworkers guess the song.

(adapted from Humorist & National Speaker, Scott Friedman’s  10 ways to celebrate National Humor Month).

During humor month and beyond, build a humor habit. Find something to laugh about every day. Start a humor notebook, jot down funny quotes or things you hear during each day. Funny is all around us – a slip of the tongue, a sign that can be interpreted or misinterpreted in different ways or anything that makes you smile.

How will you exercise your funny bone?

Fun Friday – National Humor Month

“Always laugh when you can, its cheap medicine.” – Lord Byron

Are you stressed at home or work? Find something to laugh about. The month of April is celebrated as National Humor Month AND National Stress Awareness Month. Perhaps it’s not you who is stressed, but a friend. Make them laugh. Let me help you find something to laugh about.
Journey with me though an atypical work day…

Traffic was bumper to bumper on my morning commute to a conference for work. After an hour of traveling at a snail’s pace, my coworker and I arrived late. The only seats left in the small room, were in the first two rows. She sat in the first row. I spotted the continental breakfast table, grabbed a bagel and coffee I forced and slid into the second row seat.

The first half of the day went well. Lunch was served - a half sandwich, salad, a spoonful of pasta and kettle chips. Surely I would be okay and alert during the afternoon portion of the workshop.
One hour into the afternoon session, and my eyelids became like steel doors, heavy, closing slowly. I forced my eyes to remain open, by doing a repeated eyebrow raises. I twisted in my chair, I played with my hair, but I lost the battle.

Before I could catch myself, my body relaxed, and my head SNAPPED backward. I quickly opened my eyes and tried to regain my composure. I got out of my seat and strolled to the refreshment table for a chocolate chip cookie.

I stood at the back of the room a few minutes, in an attempt to shake the sandman off my back. When I returned to my seat, I texted my mother and said, “I just fell asleep at my workshop and I’m sitting in the second row.”

My mother texted back and said, “Lord, please send your Holy Spirit to keep this child awake!”
If you find yourself in a stressful situation or experiencing a stressful day, find a way add a bit of humor.

Do you have a story to share for National Humor Month?

Fun Friday – What happens when family gets involved in National Humor Month?

As National Humor Month continues, my whole family seems to want to get in on the fun of laughter. My son called me the other day from college and said, “Ma, guess what? I took my finals early and I can come home Monday.”
“Monday? There’s still three more weeks of school, did you find storage for your big items?” I went on and on. My son assured me that he was taking care of things. Then I had another thought…
“You need to complete the rest of the month at school. I’ve already paid room and board, you need to be there for every meal.” In the middle of my ranting and raving, my son interrupted me and said, “April Fool.”
My son had hooked me and reeled me in, but that’s ok because I paid him back. I told him, “You know that check I sent you, for no reason? There are no funds in the bank to cover it…April Fool.”
Later in the conversation, my son wanted to know if I was getting any income tax money back and if so how much. I said, “Slow down buddy, you’re getting kind of personal.”
His reply was, “If thou doesn’t ask, thou doesn’t know and that’s from the book of…”
I finished his sentence for him, “That was from the book of Fairy Tales, because you just made it up, but good try.”
My other teen son, not wanting to be left out of humor month asked me, “Ma how much are you going to put in to help me get a car?”
I was quick with my reply, “nothing.” I am still trying to recover from the shock that my kids think I have a fountain of money somewhere. This is what happens when family gets involved in Humor Month, they provide tons of situations that provoke laughter.
What stories have caused to laugh lately?

Fun Friday – National Humor Month – 7 ways to incorporate laughter into your day

April is National Humor Month. Although we’re near the end of the month, it’s no too late to get in a few laughs. Did you know that there is a director of National Humor Month? Yep. Steve Wilson is the Director of National Humor Month, he says we should up our laughter quotient for our health and happiness.

According to Steve Wilson’s statistics, the average American laughs 15 times daily. If you haven’t laughed yet today, you’d better get busy. You don’t have to keep the fun all to yourself, include the whole family. Below are 7 suggestions on how to incorporate laughter into your day (Adapted from Steve Wilson’s 48 Classroom Action Projects About Humor & Laughter).

1.      Read aloud something humorous every day.

2.      Have a best joke contest among your family members or friends.

3.      Have your child create a book of funny family folklore. Kid s can ask siblings, parents and grandparents to share a favorite funny story; share something funny that happened to them.

4.      Play tickle tag – elementary age children may enjoy this game. Instead of tagging a person, you tickle them.

5.      Write different types of laughs on note cards, pass them out and have each person demonstrate the laugh; Example – snicker, giggle, snort, chuckle, cackle.

6.      Host a Laugh-In – invite friends over and have a party with the theme of Laughter. You could play silly games, make crazy faces, laugh at each other and have prizes.

7.      Watch something funny on TV.
Find your funny bone today and let it rip. Happy laughing!
