Motivational Monday – 12 Days of Kindness

Are you familiar with the song, The 12 Days of Christmas? Sure you are, the first line says, “On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me, a partridge in a pear tree.” What if…we took that same concept and called it The 12 Days of Kindness?

I wish I could say I came up with this title, but I didn’t. I saw it on Instagram. Here’s the spin I’ll put on it. Let’s create s 12 Days of Kindness Challenge. The challenge begins with being kind to yourself. Instead of a partridge in a pear tree on the first day of Christmas, the first day of kindness will be self-care for you.

Start your challenge by coming up with one positive word that represents you. On the second day of kindness, come up for two positive words for a friend, and share them with him or her in a text or email. Let the list of kindness expand from here.

Third Day of Kindness – buy a cup of coffee/tea/snack for three people.

Fourth Day of Kindness – in the spirit of “four calling birds,” call four friends or relatives just to say hi.

Fifth Day of Kindness – give away five potted plants, make them poinsettias with gold ribbons attached.

Sixth Day of Kindness – encourage six friends to donate to a cause. Do you have a favorite charity or know someone in need? Come up with a creative way to help.

Seventh Day of Kindness – in the traditional song, seven represents “seven swans a-swimming.” Since swans are beautiful and graceful, come up with seven things that make you feel beautiful and carefree. No need to do them all at once. Keep your list and do them when you want.

Eighth Day of Kindness – leave an encouraging message at eight places you visit.

Ninth Day of Kindness – let’s go back to the song again, and what the lyrics say, “nine ladies dancing.”  Invite nine friends to dancing. Get your body moving, it’s a form of self-care. If you don’t want to go out in a crowd, use Zoom or another virtual platform to create a dance party.

Tenth Day of Kindness – what is the most valuable thing that you can give away, but can never get back? Time. Give yourself the gift of time. During this Holiday season give yourself 10 minutes a day to relax in any way you choose. I said any way you choose, but I do have a few suggestions – read, listen to soft music, meditate, look at Christmas lights while relaxing with a warm beverage. You get the idea. Eventually you’ll expand your ten minutes and create valuable uninterrupted time for yourself.

Eleventh Day of Kindness – send a letter to eleven family members with updates on what’s happening in your household and find out what they’ve been up to.

Twelfth Day of Kindness – write a positive affirmation or quote on twelve pieces of paper, make it like a bookmark. Leave one in 12 random books at the library.

What would you add to the list of things to do for the 12 days of kindness? Remember most of all to be kind to yourself.

Feel Good Friday – The Gift

The trucks from Amazon and UPS cruised up and down my street daily, leaving packages of joy for my neighbors. It was the way of life during our state mandated quarantine. People were ordering online rather than visiting stores. My sons even had a package or two appear on our doorstep.

Gifts bring joy to the giver and receiver. Have you ever watched a child at Christmas rip open the wrapping paper and boxes to discover their treasure? The parent is all smiles, watching the beaming smile and squeals of excitement. I felt this same excitement recently.

As I pulled into my driveway, the headlights shot a beam of light onto my front porch. Nestled in a corner was a box large enough to fit a basketball and a dozen tennis balls (for description purposes). I was not expecting a package and assumed one of my sons had ordered something.

After a 12-hour workday, my body was weary, but I became energized as I opened the package. It was like New Year’s Eve as confetti flew around on the tissue paper as each item was unwrapped. The gifts were fabulous, but more than that…was the thoughtfulness.

The gift was from a young lady who asked me to be her mentor. For her, the gift of time meant a lot. For me…finally, someone who wanted to listen to me talk; Lord know my sons tire of my words.

Seriously though, a gift does not always have to include an expense. It can be words of encouragement, spending time with someone, or a random act of kindness. While Amazon and UPS are still  delivering presents, you can get in on the action too. Your presence can be a present to someone.

To my special friend, thank you for having me as your mentor. You are a joy.

Share your gift of love today.

Motivational Monday – How do you express kindness during COVID-19?

The teal bag with shiny gold polka dots rested on the kitchen table. An envelope peeked over the top of the handles. There was just enough room in the bag for the 16-ounce bottled water, a bag of chips, and the card. As I leaned over, glancing into the bag a voice echoed behind me.

“That’s mine,” said my son.

“Okay, I’m just looking.”

“I meant to tell you, one of the customers left that on their porch for me.”

My son worked for a company where he shopped for people, so they don’t have to leave their homes during this time of COVID 19. The customer who left the card, wrote my son’s name on the inside and a message that read, “thank you for making things a little easier for our family.”

A few words written inside of a greeting card, for someone you’ve never met, and may never cross paths with again, sent a strong message of kindness. Random acts of kindness, things not expected, but appreciated, can brighten someone’s day.

What are things you can do to spread kindness during uncertain and anxious times? Below are a few ideas to get you started.

1.       Leave a note of gratitude for your mail carrier.
2.      Write a note of thanks and tape it to the lid of your trash can on trash day.
3.      Offer to run an errand for an elderly neighbor.
4.      Send a letter or mail a card to someone you have not seen in a while.
5.      Send a gift card to your hair stylist, let her know how much she is appreciated.
6.      Write a fun message with sidewalk chalk – get the kids involved.
7.      Do a wellness check – spend time checking in on friends or relatives; a quick phone call or video chat may bring more joy than you know.

A teal gift bag with gold polka dots held simple contents, yet the message spoke volumes. Kindness.
What would you add to the list of ways to spread kindness?

Feel Good Friday – Kindness is contagious – 3 Ways to spread it

Photo Credit: Leading Your Life with Kindness

What does it cost to be kind to someone? A smile and an encouraging word are sufficient payment. It was college move-in day and I didn’t know what to expect, nor did my son. The extent of our knowledge was that we had a four-hour drive. It was a drive to a town I had never heard of, in a state I’ve driven past only by way of highway signs.

We arrived at my sons’ new place of residence, a corner house with enough paved parking for five vehicles. As we approached the door we nearly bumped into a couple of young kids running in our direction. Their smiling faces greeted us, followed by the introductions of their parents. The rambunctious boys were siblings to the older guys who were to be roommates with my son.

As we crossed the threshold of the front door the coach extended his hand and introduced himself. The large living room was filled with friendly conversation, laughter, families, and players eating pizza. These were the players of the college basketball team and their families, getting to know each other.

Kindness is contagious. How do you spread it? Here are 3 ways.

1.      Share your smile – people like to see a smiling face, it can change how they’re feeling
2.      Let someone go ahead of you in a crowded grocery store line
3.      Share a word of encouragement with someone
Kindness is contagious, it warms your heart and the heart of the person on the receiving end.

After shopping for a few items for my sons’ new living quarters, we took our items to the register to pay. The smiling cashier engaged in conversation with us. When I presented my driver’s license with the payment she said, “Oh, you’re a ways from home.”

“My son is here for college.”

The cashier look up at my son and said, “Do you know anyone here?”

His response was, “No, not yet.”

“Well, my name is Marsha, now you know me. Stop by the store anytime and say hi.”

My son and I both left the store with a smile and a warm fuzzy feeling that makes your heart smile.

Well, that was my sentiment, not sure my son would use those words.

What does it cost to be kind to someone? A little bit of time and a whole lot of smiles.

Words of Wisdom – World Gratitude Day – 3 tips for celebrating

Gratitude – the quality of being thankful. World Gratitude Day is celebrated on September 21st.  First, give thanks for your life, imperfections and all. Celebrate where you are planted at this moment.

World Gratitude Day was first celebrated 1965. Let’s keep this tradition going by showing appreciation for things big and small. Below are 3 tips for celebrating this world holiday.
.
1.      Be thankful for your community – show gratitude where ever you go on this day. Extend a special thanks to community workers – mail carrier, cashier at a store, server at a restaurant.

2.      Write a note of thanks – reach out to someone you haven’t talked to in a while; send a card or short note just saying, “thinking of you.”

3.      Start a gratitude journal – this could also be in the form of a gratitude jar. Write one thing each day that you are thankful for, it can be big or small. You will begin to appreciate the little things that we don’t take time to enjoy.

What tips do you have for celebrating World Gratitude Day? Go out and brighten someone’s day with your smile.

A random act of kindness

A small cup of coffee from someone with a big heart, was the result of a random act of kindness.

Have you ever been the recipient of a random act of kindness? It can be a humbling experience. On the drive to work one morning I debated whether I would stop for a Tim Horton’s coffee. I could almost feel the warmth of the cup in my hands. A small cup of decaf with double cream, double sweetner and a shot of vanilla….aaaaaah.
On the morning of my quest for coffee, I had just given my son lunch money for the week and sent him off to school. As I was nearing Tim Horton’s I checked my purse for more money. All I had was $1.00 and some change. I really wanted a coffee. I didn’t NEED it, but I WANTED it.

I pulled into the drive thru at Tim Horton’s, placed my order and collected the change from my purse. As I prepared to hand the cahier the money she said, “The car in front of you just paid for your order.”
I sat there for a moment like a deer in head lights as I said, “Oh, ok, thanks.” I pulled off to try and catch the car. I was able to pull up next to her at a red light. I tooted my horn and gave her a “thumbs up” as I mouthed the words, “Thank you.” We both continued on in different directions.

What happened that day at the Tim Horton’s drive thru was more than a random act of kindness. It was a blessing. The car in front of me had no way of knowing that I was searching for the last of my pocket change. However, her small gesture of kindness went a long way.
I walked around with a warm fuzzy feeling all that day.

What has been your experience with a random act of kindness?
