Fun Friday – Uncovering humor for the Holidays

Tis’ the season to be jolly…you know the rest. It is also the time of year many people experience a lot of stress. Take a step away from what is causing you stress and find something funny in your day. You may have to uncover the humor in a situation.

On many occasions, a young child brings a smile to my face; it happened most recently on a Sunday morning during a youth Sunday school class. Here’s the scenario…

Sunday School Teacher:          Today our lesson is about David
Six Year Old:                           I know David
Sunday School Teacher:          I don’t think you know this David
Six Year Old:                           Are you serious?

The Holiday season seems to be a time when sweet treats are plentiful and many people vow to begin a health regimen in the New Year. I am one of those “many people.” A few situations caused me to think about changing my fitness routine. Here are my thoughts:

You might need to change your fitness routine if…

·         Your fitness app is draining your phone battery, and you don’t even use the app.

·         Your arm exercises consist of lifting your fork to your mouth.

·         You step on the scale and your prayer is, “please don’t let that peach cobbler have put me over my weight loss goals.”

Jesus is the reason for the season, and it is the season to be jolly, joyful and living your best life.

What humorous situations have you uncovered during this Holiday season?

Happy Holidays.

Fun Friday – 5 Reasons you should not skip breakfast

It was quiet in the church pews, eyes were closed and heads bowed. One of the deacons was praying. Moments into the prayer, the sound of paper rustling could be heard. I opened one eye, then the other, and continued opening the peppermint candy that I’d scavenged from the bottom of my purse. I had skipped breakfast.

You may have heard it said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I’m no expert, but I believe this to be true. Test this theory out for yourself. Go a few days without starting your day with breakfast. Then begin a few days eating something of nutritious value. Note the difference in your mood and behavior.

Let’s look at a sample study done during a Sunday morning church service. After observing a parishioner who had not eaten breakfast, the following signs were identified that she had not eaten breakfast.

1.      As communion was passed around in the little plastic cups, one woman eyeballed her neighbors wine/juice and unleavened bread. If you were to lean in close, you could hear her whisper, “are you going to eat that?”

2.      The choir is singing, yet you can hear the person next to you as her stomach roars. She tries to clap loudly to drown out the rumble.

3.      Low energy level – the person sitting in front of you closes her eyes during prayer and doesn’t open them again until the pastor says, “…in closing.”

DISCLAIMER:   This was not a real study, but a fabrication of the author’s creative imagination.

Below are two reasons the experts say you should not skip breakfast
4.      Weight gain – when breakfast is skipped, you are more likely to eat more to overcompensate your body.
5.      Serves as fuel – eating breakfast provides fuel for your body and helps your brain function (the crazy facts website).

What would you add to the list of reasons why you should not skip breakfast?

Fun Friday – Church Humor

It’s the end of the week, how about a little humor to get your weekend started? Below are jokes that a friend shared with me by email. I hope there is one or two that will bring a smile to your face.

1.      A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her
five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to “Honor
thy father and thy mother,” she asked, “Is there a commandment that
teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?” Without missing a
beat, one little boy answered, 'Thou shall not kill...”

2.      A little girl, dressed in her Sunday best, was running as fast as she
could, trying not to be late for Bible class. As she ran she prayed,
“Dear Lord, please don't let me be late! Dear Lord, please don't let
me be late!' While she was running and praying, she tripped on a curb
and fell, getting her clothes dirty and tearing her dress. She got up,
brushed herself off, and started running again! As she ran she once
again began to pray, 'Dear Lord, please don't let me be late...But
please don't shove me either!”

3.      A Sunday school teacher asked her class why Joseph and Mary took Jesus
with them to Jerusalem. A small child replied, “They couldn't get a
baby-sitter.”

4.      Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her
mother, “Why is the bride dressed in white?'' The mother replied,
“Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest
day of her life.” The child thought about this for a moment then said,
“So why is the groom wearing black?”
