Memorial Day
is a time to honor military personnel who have lost their lives in the line of
duty. Observed on the last Monday in May, this Holiday has many interesting
facts associated with it.

Facts associated with Memorial Day.
1. Waterloo observed the first Memorial
Day on May 5, 1866. The celebration consisted of a community-wide event in
which residents decorated the graves of soldiers and local businesses closed
down for the festivities.
2. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson
declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day.
3. By 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday
Act went into effect, and Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday
that would occur on the last Monday in May.
