Motivational Monday – Super Bowl Sunday - You Are a Winner

You Are a Winner

A dash to the store on Sunday afternoon turned out to be a marathon. The parking lot didn’t look super busy. However, inside the store, the checkout lines wrapped around a section of women’s t-shirts, then weaved through men’s pants. Darn pandemic, I mumbled to myself… has everyone rushing out to shop again.

After a few moments I realized, this Sunday wasn’t about the pandemic; it was Super Bowl Sunday. Shoppers were grabbing one more pack of wings, snacks, and other goodies. In addition to watching the game, there is another tradition that draws fans in…watching the commercials.

Do you have a favorite commercial from the Super Bowl? Some are funny and entertaining, and others are thought provoking. There is one commercial that stands out for me is said, “Are you happy because you win, or do you win because you are happy?” How would you respond to this question?

Now, I’m not talking about the Kansas City Chiefs or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but real life – Happiness vs. Winner, how does it play out?

Let me plant this seed for you – You are a winner. You can choose happiness. When you choose happiness, everything else falls into place. You behave like a winner, you walk like a winner, and you speak like a winner. Be bold but be humble. Your attitude most certainly determines your altitude.

The game is at the two-minute warning, it’s 4th down and goal…what is your outlook on your life? Do you believe you are a winner?

Muffins with Mom – 3 Things the Super Bowl has taught me about parenting

Junior Football League Super Bowl Win
The Super Bowl is over, but there are still lessons to be learned from the game of football. In Super Bowl 49, The New England Patriots faced the Seattle Seahawks. In my house, it’s Mama going head to head with her teen son.
My son and I meet at the line of scrimmage – I’m ready with my list of demands for him and he is ready to explain why he can’t comply. Since football is one of my son’s passions we use this to discuss many life lessons. Sometimes he learns a lesson and sometimes I learn.
Here are three things I learned about parenting from the Super Bowl…

1.      Be nonreactive – sometimes it’s better not to react to s situation right away, rather than to over react cause yourself unnecessary stress. You may have seen it happen during a tense moment in a big game – one player is frustrate with an opponent and a shoving match begins. Being nonreactive could diffuse a situation such as this.

2.      There is no “I” in teamwork – this is a phrase I have heard often, but was reminded of it as I watched the Super Bowl. At the end of the game, each person on the winning team that was interviewed, mentioned that their win was a team effort. Sometimes as parent we forget that our kids are part of the team and depending on their age, it’s okay to include them in family decisions.

3.      It’s ok if I don’t know everything – after years of watching my boys play football, I still don’t understand all of positions and their role on the field. This same philosophy hold true with parenting, after doing this job for years, I am still learning.
A bonus parenting tip – it’s ok to do a celebration dance at the end of the game (for an accomplishment, achievement, etc.). One son’s high school graduation was an event that was cause for celebrating.
Are there any lessons you learned from watching a Super Bowl game, humorous or otherwise?

Football Frenzy – A mom’s spin on the Super Bowl

There was a lot of hype surrounding the recent college football game between Alabama State and Notre Dame. Then I found out that it’s almost time for early bird registration for my son’s little league football team. AND the Super Bowl is upon us.
All of this football talk started me thinking…what would a Super Bowl for moms look like? I would compare the game of football to assigning my kids a list of chores to complete. Here’s what I think it would look like at my house.

Kickoff – a list of chores written on a football or written on a piece of paper attached to a football.

Kick return – my boys receiving the list of chores. The only downfall to this is that they would probably fumble the ball just so they didn’t have to read the list of chores.

Flag on the play – the boys would receive a penalty every time I had to repeat myself when giving them a task to complete.
First Down – when the first task is completed.

Half Time – there would not be any cool commercials, but I would be sure to cheer and shout over accomplishments made during the first half of our faux football game.
Touchdown – A touchdown is scored when a task is completed by one of the kids.

Championship Ring – the winners would be presented with championship rings made of twist ties from a loaf of bread.

In reality my kids would look at me like I was from another planet if I told them, let’s turn your chore list into a game of football. So what do you really do with the kids during the Super Bowl? We create a small party with snacks.
An article titled Fun for the kids during the super bowl, listed ideas to do with the kids during the super bowl. Below are a few favorites:

·         Buy a green paper tablecloth and let the kids decorate it to look like a football field.

·         Serve football themed snacks – cupcakes, cookies, cake.

·         Have football themed word searches or crossword puzzles. Have the kids compete to see who will finish first.
What would a Mom’s Super Bowl look like at your house? Do you do anything special for Super Bowl Sunday?
