Halloweensie Contest

I’m participating in Susanna Leonard Hill’s 9^th Annual Halloweensie Writing Contest. 

The rules are simple, write a story using 100 words or less. You must use some form of the words – Potion, Cobweb, and Trick. Stories must be appropriate for children 12 years and under. Sounds easy, right? Wrong. It’s a challenge, but it’s fun.

Here’s my story…

A Zombie Girl Halloween

Halloween party, come one, come all,

Zombie Girl stood straight and tall.

Wearing baggy, boogie pants,

it was tricky to dance her dance.

“Zombie Girl, you look silly,

dressed in pants, lacey and frilly.”

Zombie Girl dropped her head,

sat in a corner pouting instead.

Spotting a sign, she knew what to do,

Magic potion, to feel brand new.

Spooky bubbles in a glass,

Filled high, make it last.

Zombie juice spills on toes,

Covered with cobwebs, hold your nose.

One, two, Zombie feet move,

three, four, dance to a groove.

Zombie Girl loves to dance,

especially wearing frilly pants.

The Contest: write a 100 word Halloween story appropriate for children (children here defined as 12 and under) (title not included in the 100 words), using the words shiver, cauldron, and howl.  Your story can be scary, funny, or anything in between, poetry or prose, but it will only count for the contest if it includes those 3 words and is 100 words (you can go under, but not over).

How Do Ninjas Trick or Treat?

Ninjas tip-toe street to street,

Faces covered don’t you peek.

Cauldrons filled to the brim,

Ninjas leap limb to limb.

What’s inside? Hold your nose,

Icky, sticky, stinky toes.

How do Ninjas trick or treat?

Dance and prance to a beat.

Howls heard far away,

Ninjas rush to save the day.

Cauldrons filled to the brim,

Tip and spill, leave faces grim.

One Ninja shivered, one Ninja shook.

Two Ninjas sprinted to the nearest brook.

Cauldrons empty, sticky toes no more,

Toes hop to the brooks bumpy cool floor.

Ninjas tip-toe street to street,

home at last ready for sleep.

Halloweensie Contest for Children’s Writer’s

It’s that time of year, children’s author Susanna Leonard Hill’s 7^th Annual Halloweensie Contest.

The Contest:  Write a 100 word Halloween story for children, using the words candy corn, monster and shadow.

Hope you enjoy my story (96 words).

Elly’s Trunk or Treat

Elly Phant scooped  gobs of candy corn with her trunk. Something was following her.

“Woooo,” Owl hooted.

“Roooar,” Lion screamed.

“Ooot ooot ooot,” Monkey screeched.

Elly Phant tip-toed past animal cages.

The zoo was creepy on Halloween night. Animals roamed free.

Every shadow looked monsterly.

“Kikiki kuk kuk kuh,” Eagle squawked.

Elly sprayed candy corn in the air.

“Thump, thump, whomp,” Beaver pounded.

Elly sprayed candy corn.

“Squeak,” Mouse stood on hind legs.

Elly stood on hind legs, “Har-ooo.”

A shower of candy corn filled the air. Treats for all zoo animals, from Elly’s trunk.

Elly danced with her shadow.

Valentine Porchetta

213 words

Pork Chop was a plump pig who loved picnics.

Mr. Fox invited her to a Porchetta for Valentine’s Day. It was the biggest pig roast celebration of the year.

Pork Chop snorted her snout and squealed with delight. Only two days to decide what to cook.

“What should I bring to the picnic?” Pork Chop asked Mr. Fox.

Mr. Fox was a sly rascal. He smacked his lips at the thought of a juicy chop.

“Bring something yummy.”

Pork Chop trotted home to prepare her favorite picnic foods.

The next day she met Mr. Fox under the sycamore tree with a plate of piping hot pigs in a blanket.

Mr. Fox stuck his claw into one of the wieners, “Mmmmmm, delightful, but how about something bigger?”

Back in her kitchen, Pork Chop, stirred, mixed and baked. She met Mr. Fox at the Porchetta. The grill was sizzling.

 “We’ll I’ll be hog tied,” said Pork Chop. “You invited me to your pig roast to make me the main course.”

Mr. Fox inched closer to Pork Chop, but she put her hoofs in the air.

“I have the swine flu, you can’t eat me. Try this.”

Pork Chop shoved a giant, gooey heart shaped cookie into Mr. Fox’s paws.”

It was love at first bite.
